Preparing for a headshot photo session can make a big difference in the outcome of your photos.  Before reading through the guidelines below, please know that they are only guidelines and not a strict set of rules.  If your photographer tells you to do or wear something that is truly against your style, I recommend that you go with your normal style.  That being said, the guidelines below can still greatly help you…

  1. Choose the right outfit: Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Avoid patterns, logos, or anything too distracting. Solid colors and simple designs are often best. Consider what the photos will be used for and dress appropriately.  If you are in the midst of a job search, wear something that you would wear to a job interview.
  2. Jewelry: Sometimes jewelry can be distracting in a still photo, such as over-sized earrings.
  3. Glasses: If you normally wear glasses, then by all means wear them to your photo session.  If you have multiple sets of glasses, you may want to bring them.  Some of the coatings applied to lenses in eyeglasses can cause very odd colors and tints in a photograph.  For example, blue-blocking technology can cause a yellow tint on the lenses.
  4. Get plenty of rest: Being well-rested will help you look and feel your best. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep the night before the photo session.
  5. Hydrate and eat well: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking hydrated and eat a healthy meal before your session. Avoid salty foods that can cause bloating.
  6. Grooming: Take care of any grooming needs such as haircuts, shaving, or makeup application before the session, clipping nails, etc.
  7. Practice good posture: Stand up straight and relax your shoulders. Good posture will make you look confident and professional.
  8. Communicate with your photographer: Let your photographer know what you’re looking for in your headshot, or if there is anything in particular that you are self-conscious about.
  9. Be relaxed and have fun: Try to relax and have fun during the photo session. Smile naturally and take deep breaths to help you feel calm and comfortable.

Remember, a good headshot should accurately represent who you are while presenting you in the best possible light.  By following these guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to create a great headshot.

Enjoy!
